Starting a business in this tech-driven world is a double-edged sword. It is easy and accessible, all thanks to the digital boom, yet it is challenging because of tough competition.

Five years ago when I started my business, things were challenging. The digital boom was still underway, social media was not as vital as it is today, and competition was not so fierce.

Simply put, things were different. However, regardless of all these obstacles I still recommend starting a business in your student years.

Why?

Well, I admit that finances can be an issue, however, you can get help from friends and some experienced supervisors in the form of teachers. Moreover, as a student, you are more driven and idealistic and have a better chance of starting again after a failed venture.

Now that you are convinced, let us look at a basic framework to help you start a business.

Explore a Niche

Exploring the niche is the first thing you need to do when starting, or at least planning a business. A niche is a category or industry where you will plan your business. For instance, food, art, apparel, decor, tech, finance, and everything else falls under a niche.

Searching for a niche is as important as a compass is to a traveler. Since it plays a pivotal role, make sure to invest a lot of time because this will determine the success of your business. Finding a niche is not difficult especially if you are a student.

While searching for my niche, you just need a good enough internet and some browsing skills. Chances are that you already have both, that is why you are here. As for the searching skill, just look for some lucrative industries in 2025 for business. This will help you narrow down your options and get to an industry that you like.

Design a Plan

Now that you have filtered your industry, it is time to filter your options.

Let’s say you picked food as your niche. You need to set your expectations. Do you want to open a restaurant or a ghost kitchen? Or do you want to just start a cooking channel, or start food blogging?

After filtering out your idea, it’s time to design a business plan. It will consist of the list of raw materials you need, the list of essential equipment, as well as the overall investment you will need. Now, you need to set a short-term goal related to the business and assess the overall amount you will need as a cushion.

Now that you have everything ready, let’s get to the actual part of the business – building a brand. In the digital media world, personal branding plays a very important. A powerful brand can help you not just sell your products, it can also help you outshine your competitors.

You can start by running a basic competitive analysis. Look for some of the best brands within your category of business and then look at the strategy. Analyzing the strategy will eventually help you understand different techniques to appeal to the right audience.

For instance, in some businesses, an informal video content strategy works better while in others, formal picture-based content works better. It all comes down to the type of brand you want to create.

Monetize Your Business

Finally, it is time to monetize your business. Although you might have listed the revenue model in your business plan, businesses scale digitally and evolve. This means that while you might have a revenue model in place, your income stream might become diverse over time.

This can be through collaboration, brand sponsorships, platform content, a cookbook, or anything related. You can even open your own store, an app, or a food business like Hello Fresh.

Simply put, starting a business is a rewarding process. However, it is better to evolve as you scale your businesses, see the growth, and adjust in real time. In most cases, when businesses evolve naturally, they become more diverse and profitable, so keep your mind open.
